In the past GPU blocks have been little more than pretty means to join two pieces of tubing. Titch has a look to see if Danger Den finally breaks the mould:

"Everything from the thickness of the aluminium top to the huge chrome cannons called barbs say big. My son thinks it looks like the gun placement on a battleship."

Sometimes the most simplest of mods are striking and effective, this one by JohnL definitely fits that bill:

"Windows are boring! Regardless of the size, type, colour or whatever the window on the side of your beloved case is boring. It allows you to look into your computer, so people can see that you have spent hours tidying the cables and colour coding your system to look good. But the fact still remains that the window itself is still boring."

In the last Month we have had the pleasure of reviewing four products from Nexus. Now comes their new silent P4 cooler, JohnL has a look to see if the silent comes with cool or hot:

"As Technology moves on so must our uses for it. With overclocking and noise being two of the main areas for cooling requirements, is it any wonder that people have flocked to high quality noiseless coolers that can still pack a punch. Nexus have just entered the battle by launching a brand new Cooling Solution for the Socket 478 Pentium 4 range."

A Cool Pair..

There are times when I just love my job soooooo much. This is one of those times when I have not one but two of the coolest cards in the world, in my hands.

Yes I have two of only three Gainward CoolFX cards that are in the whole of the UK. I wonder what I would get for them on ebay........

Oh in the flesh they look better than in the pictures, trust me :)

"The WallComp"

"The WallComp"

"For a while I had wanted to do something different. I wanted to make a new type of computer case unlike any I have seen, but I didn't even know what to make it with. I thought of working with fiberglass (car-stereo style), real glass, or even modifying a glass desk. Then I found the Soldam Prism (now Prism II). This one desk/case really inspired me. A few seconds after I laid eyes on it, I was already imagining it sideways on my wall. Of course the $750 price tag to get it to my door quickly eliminated that idea. It was time to take drastic measures... it was time to mod"

Coolmax Gemini Series CD-510B-U2 3.5"/5.25" Aluminum USB 2.0 External Enclosure @ Modsynergy.com

quote:

"An external enclosure has a variety of uses for a computer user on the go. You can put a hard drive, which would be the most useful to transfer files from distant places. If you do not have enough bays left in your computer case, an external enclosure is a viable option. In this review we will be testing the functionality of using a 3.5" hard drive".

Thermaltake Ducting Mod

quote:
" I have seen a lot of really weird ways of keeping CPU's cool lately and
this is one of those off the wall ideas that I think looks pretty good.
The idea behind this mod is to pull the fan away from the heat sink to
cut down on the turbulence that is normally caused by the fans hub
blocking the flow of air across the center of the heat sink. "

Kentucky Supercomputer

University of Kentucky Supercomputer Breaks The $100 Per GFLOPS Barrier

quote:

"Researchers at the University of Kentucky have constructed and
demonstrated an innovative new, scalable, parallel supercomputer that
achieves application performance of more than 1 billion floating point
operations per second (GFLOPS) for every $100 spent on building the
machine. The approach used to design and build this machine makes it
cost-effective for solving a wide range of problems, from drug design
using computational chemistry to design of quieter printers using
computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Thus, this breakthrough, that was
not reached with Opteron processor but plain old Athlon XP2600+ Barton,
is not only a milestone, but also will enable many more scientists and
engineers to use computational models."

USB LED Mods @ MHW

"I decided I could do it better, cheaper, faster and especially cheaper. I went to K&J Electronics in Westminster, Ca - a fine source for all your bits and pieces, and bought two hi-intensity 5mm 3.5v LED's for about 5 bucks a piece. Then I wondered about how to step down the power from a Molex to run them . but since I am a lazy guy that would be too much work so I decided to take my power from the internal USB extension pins."

"This is a very good power supply let down only by its plain appearance, lack of extras (Active PFC, cable braiding and SATA power connectors), odd cable lengths and fairly large price tag for a 300W supply. Chyang Fun Minicube

"Ah Mini-ITX, what an innovation, a full computer in nothing larger than
a small box of biscuits. Being a lover of small things that make noises,
I had to buy one. For a while I settled for making my own cases (see
"Tiny Pc" article),
but unfortunately my skills with the dremel are not yet perfected and I
don't produce stuff looking as good as you can buy in the shops. So, I
decided enough was enough and I forked out for a nice shiny new case and
the Chyang Fun Minicube was the one."

With a tower case it hangs off all sides and does not look right. The mid tower case is your best bet, with the varying sizes of these you will have to play with the placement."

Zalman 400W APF PSUs

"Zalman's mission may be to deliver cooling performance without the noise you'd normally associate it with, but there's no denying that they try to get there with style; it may have been coincidence that maximum surface area heatsink design required some flash designs, but I don't think the good looks of their fan controller can be explained in similar fashion. It shouldn't really be a surprise then that their new, top of the range, 400W power supply isn't just a grey box and priced at around ~$100USD it certainly isn't cheap. So have Zalman delivered their promise again? Let's find out..."

Cooler Master Aerogate 2 reviewed

"All I can say is that the controller does what its supposed to do. Fan
RPMs are reported back correctly and the voltage range stated on the specs
are the same when checked with a multimeter. If you connect all the
sensors and fans to the unit, you'll end up having nine wires coming out
from the drive bay towards the case center. Managing all these new wires
takes some time and skill but when done properly once, you doesn't need to
worry about them again."
